Welcome to the forums!

It should work, but Ubuntu can be freely downloaded so I'd recommend trying it to see how well it pleases you and if it works well on your new laptop.oz

Getting going.
Hi Lisa, You need to download your free copy of the Ubuntu 9.10 [iso image] on an internet attached PC and then put it onto some removable media you can boot from. Most PCs will let you create a LiveCD for this purpose but if you know someone who already has Ubuntu installed on their PC then they can create a bootable USB memory stick [under System >> Administration >> USB Startup Dosk Creator] which is quick and convenient - you then just need to ensure your BIOS options are set to access the chosen media type first. Good luck - enjoy ! Phil

Depending on your laptop's manufacturer, you may also get some model-specific tips on installing Ubuntu and other Linuxes from websites devoted to them. For instance, ThinkWiki.org is a website devoted to getting Linux up-and-running on IBM ThinkPads.
