Keyboard and Mouse Failure During Boot

I have been very very pleased with upgrading to 9.10.

There has, however, been one (or maybe it is two) issue(s).

First, the PS/2 mouse, which has functioned on this machine with every other version of Ubuntu, was not recognized. Switching to a usb mouse worked, but still, it was odd.

The next problem I noticed is slightly more serious. The keyboard (which also has functioned on this machine with every other version of Ubuntu) goes dead during the boot sequence. I cannot ESC or use the arrow keys (or any other keys, for that matter). Once Ubuntu is done booting, the keyboard works fine.

I've searched the forums for other users having this difficulty, but have not found any. Hence this post. Any help?

    This is a desktop machine.

Could be a new failsafe update like "Keyboard off" during boot.

With previous Ubuntu's, did you get wild card actions if you touched the keyboard during boot? Could also have been invisible yet damaging to software inside.
