I'd like to keep this in the public forums please.

What version of Ubuntu did you install?

What method did you use to install it?

What have you done so far in attempt to fix the problem?

Open a terminal window and show us the output of the folloing commands:

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 audio

    aplay -l
(That's APLAY -L in lower case)

That should give us a start. Thank you.

Sorry, I haven't been on the computer much lately.

The reason I asked for the actual output is because the numbers matter. I know the DV4 has an Intel HDA chip... it has about 50 different incarnations (not including specific applications), some requiring certain options to work right. I don't even know which DV4 you have (1042, 1100...?), never mind the actual sound chip.

Please provide us with the actual outputs (and your laptop model).
