Stuck in text mode!
Hey guys, I'm having an issue in Karmic. I installed GDM and set it as default, but it didn't install properly, and now my PC just boots in to a tty. How do I boot back into xsplash, and reset it as default?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Caleb...

any errors on the screen or just a simple login?
I'm assuming you have ubuntu-server and needed to install a desktop environment?
or
Did you have another flavor of *buntu and wanted to switch back to gnome?
How did you install gnome?

Sorry
Ok, I'm using Ubuntu Karmic the normal Desktop version, with gnome already installed.
But because it uses the new login manager Xsplash, I installed GDM as the default login manager. However it didn't install properly and, whenever I boot, it comes up to tty. I can start gnome by logging in and typing in xstart, but it doesn't allow me to access my other hdds. Also I just wan't to go back to xsplash and use it as default

I don't use Karmic. But out of curiosity. Have you uninstalled GDM using Terminal yet?
sudo apt-get --purge remove gdm
then
apt-get autoclean
to see if xsplash (since I don't run 9.10. I run 8.04 LTS) takes over again. When you installed GDM. Did you notice if xsplash was going to be removed. You haven't mentioned whether you installed GDM via synaptic package manager, or via apt-get in terminal also.Linux Registered User # 475019

hoping for the best
Thanks mate, looks like it worked!
however before I reboot, apt said that it had to also uninstall 'Ubuntu Desktop' as a dependency. Is that okay? last time I uninstalled that file, the system went haywire!
Thanks again, Caleb.

Before you reboot. Let it uninstall Ubuntu Desktop. Then reinstall Ubuntu Desktop by using
sudo apt-get install (package name like Ubuntu Desktop. Has to be the exact name. OK?)
IT is good you kept your eye on what can be uninstalled via apt-get. Some users go blindly using this function and wonder why things don't work. You should also look at what gets removed using synaptic also.
I mention this because upgrades can sometimes remove things inadvertently. In Sidux apt-get upgrade you some times have to reinstall stuff that gets removed like mplayer and wicd.Linux Registered User # 475019

ubuntu desktop isn't a requirement package, it just depends on all the other packages ubuntu has installed so you can install them all easily if you are on kubuntu, xubuntu, etc. As you can guess, there is a kubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop package too.
