can't watch video & other probs

    Hi,

Ever since I've had Ubuntu, I've been unable to watch Youtube or other vids - the best I can get is occasionally bitsy vid, as if it's a memory or speed problem. But I had no prob with the same computer before I changed from Windows XL earlier this year.

The other probs are lately(perhaps since last Ubuntu upgrade, but not sure) the computer gets slow or 'sticky', sometimes the windows 'grey out' as if overloaded, even when I have nothing else doing. When I try to use Computer Janitor it doesn't work(can empty garbage bin tho), and attempting to use the Software centre, Add/Remove Apps or Synaptic Package Manager, when I try to add or uninstall stuff, it generally comes up with 'waiting for another synaptic program to finish' or some such, even when I've just turned on the machine, or it makes like it's working, then says 'failed'.

Do you think the second set of probs are relating to the upgrade & so should I go back to the older version, or what other suggestions could you tell me please??

Are you using the latest from Ubuntu i.e. Karmic?
    I hope so....

Then I would suggest you to move to the previous version of Ubuntu i.e. Jaunty because it is much more stable than Karmic. Karmic, although has some advances from Jaunty but still it has got some problems like sometimes sound driver doesn't loads & you have to restart it. Also we have been seeing that it sometimes(actually many times) doesn't mount your usb drives automatically and even your other ntfs drives (Basically it doesn't detect any media on them and so you have to edit fstab to mount these USBs and hard drives!!). And there were many other problems also. I have dumped it and moved onto the older one and waiting for the next release of ubuntu. Probably you should also do the same.

you need to install flash, go to synaptic package manager, search for it, and install it. If you are using a machine for media purposes it may be better to just use linux mint, which is based on ubuntu but comes with popular codecs, like the flash movie player, installed.

Thanks for the replies! Upgraded only a few weeks ago, so think so, but I also seem to have acquired something called 'edubuntu'. Would this be to do with having installed educational games for my kids?

OK, so bit of a dunce & it seems straight forward to upgrade, but need some instrucs on how to downgrade please?

This is specifically relating to the vid prob? Think I have Flash, but how would I install it, when the synaptic package manager isn't working? If I change to this mint, can I still do everything Ubuntu can do? And with downgrading or changing, do I need to back everything up & start again with addons & stuff?
