How do I check drivers in ubuntu

I have just upgraded to the new distro of ubuntu and my sound drivers stopped working, At first it was depending on each boot, sometimes it would work and others it would not work. Now my sound is consistantly not working on each boot, even on cold boots. I was wondering how to check my drives and how I could go about updating to drivers that would work and if there are any sites, other than the manufacturers site, that might have working drivers for this version.

I have a Toshiba Tecra M7. It originally came with windows xp tablet but I put in a new hard drive and put a fresh install of ubuntu in it, but this current version is an upgrade from the previous version. I am hoping not to have to put a fresh install on it but I will try that after this quarter is over.

    gene@gene-linux-laptop1:~$ lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 audio
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller [8086:27d8] (rev 02)
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
    Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

    gene@gene-linux-laptop1:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC262 Analog [ALC262 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
    Subdevices: 0/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I am on ubuntu 9-10 and I upgraded via the update manager.

Have you checked all volume settings? If you install the programs paman and padevchooser and open them up while audio is playing, do you see it trying to play? It should have some bars that move up and down as the audio plays.

    Installed Pulse Audio

I installed Pulse Audio and had it open while music was playing back and it said
showing signal levels of dummy output. And the bars were moving. When I looked at the hardware devices for output, there were none there. Could this be that this new version of ubuntu is not recognising my sound card?
