hmmmmm???? i'm following the install directions...??

when following the install directions, i created a src folder and have a downloaded tar.gz. my src is locked and won't let me drag the tar.gz into it! i'm the root user?

I ended up just taking putting it in my home folder instead (i'm installing sonbird btw). From there I was able to run the tar -zxvf just fine. I ran ls and songbird.tar.gz was there along with my desktop, documents and everything else in the home folder. The songbird.tar.gz was red. I assumed this was good. I typed cd songbird.tar.gz and it tells me this is not a directory. I tried to skip and got to the make and it says nothing to be done to this file. i figured that was good so i did make install and it says no rule to make target install. stop... can someone please help me?

Okay, back up. What install directions are you referring to? You should be able to get Songbird off the Ubuntu repositories by using Add/Remove Programs or Synaptic Package Manager.

Despite appearances, the songbird downloaded prominently displayed on their website is actually a binary package, not source.

You can run songbird straight from the executable out of the unzipped package, but you probably want it installed properly.

There are a couple of places to download a deb file for ubuntu.

Oh and there may be some conflict between the gstreamer libraries that songbird ships with and the ubuntu versions.
