Help with log in screen (Ubuntu)
Hi, I'm new to these forums as well as Ubuntu. I've tried asking for help with this problem on another forum but it seems no one had the answer or cared enough to help. I've downloaded Ubuntu to a DVD, booted from it and installed Ubuntu next to Vista on my hard drive. I followed the directions and let it automatically partition since I don't know how to do it.
After installing, I rebooted and tried to boot into Ubuntu from the Grub loader. The log in screen, which is just a black screen with white letters (which I assume is normal?), is flickering really fast and doesn't recognize my keystrokes (almost like it's refreshing itself over and over really really fast). I can get my username typed in after a few pushes of each letter but not the password and I don't know how I can get past this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It looks like a graphics issue. I'm posting this just to let you know that you aren't forgotten - Saturday nights are a bad time for posting.

Welcome to the forums!

I agree with scutiform that it sounds like a graphics issue and would recommend trying the "alternate installer" (text installer) if you haven't done so already. It works every time for me, whereas the liveCD installer does not.oz

Ahh, okay. Thanks for the reply. Would you or someone else tell me how to go about using the alternate install? Do I have to uninstall my current Ubuntu version or will it just overwrite and use the same partition? I'll need a pretty good explanation as I'm brand new to Linux lol
You're the first to suggest that so I'll give it a try and see how it goes if someone wants to take the time to write a small how to. It would be really helpful

If you want to try it, you'll need to download the ISO file, burn it to disk as an image, then boot with the newly created installation disk. You can direct the installer to use the partitions that you've already created for Ubuntu. Since the alternate installer is not a liveCD, you will have text only on-screen during the installation. The installation itself is pretty much self-guided and not very difficult to complete.

Okay, that sounds good. Is the alternate install available on the Ubuntu website? Or do you have a link to where I can download it? I hope it works lol.

Under the other download options there are: Ubuntu installer for windows, text-based installer, and 64 bit version (I have Vista 64bit just so you know).
