Is it safe to download Flash directly from Adobe site?
When I use the BBC site, I see messages "Cannot play media. You do not have the correct version of the flash player. Download the correct version"
However, when I go to Applications > Ubuntu Software Centre, I get the message, "Adobe Flash Player is installed on this computer. It is used by 1 piece of installed software"
I would be grateful for any advice.
BTW: If I try to use the Firefox Adobe add-ins feature, I'm directed to the Adobe page. Is it safe to use this feature rather than, for example, Synaptic Package Manager?

Its safe to install Flash from Adobe site but package installed by Synaptic Package Manager should work fine.
Are you using any other Addon/Extension in Firefox? Adblocks and NoScript block flash contents of sites. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Yes, it's safe. As an alternative to the typical installation method, lots of users download from there, decompress the file, then copy the actual libflashplayer.so file to their plugins directory, effectively bypassing any software installation utilities. I often do that myself if the version packaged by my distribution maintainers doesn't work properly. Is it safe to download Flash directly from Adobe site?oz

Why wouldn't it be safe? This is an odd question
I downloaded the alpha 64 bit and put it right in my home folder, no longer a need to ever install flash again since my home folder is on its own partition, flash works right after fresh install

Many thanks to devils casper, ozar, jmadero for the responses

I haven't replied because I've been testing my disaster recovery plan.
It looks as if the re-installation has restored my Flash
I don't think it's an odd question for a nubuntie to ask
One of the "selling points" for Ubuntu (compared with Windows) is the fact that the repositories contain only safe software.
I've been trying Ubuntu for about a month now. If I downloaded Flash directly from their site, that would be my *first* non-repository download.
On the other hand, I would think it would be strange for a nubuntie *not* to ask before installing a non-repository item.
BTW: One of the Windows "horrors" is installing Flash and then having half of the resources tied up due to "phoning home", pop-up messages, etc, etc. Most Windows forums discuss Flash problems.
But thanks for your comments anyway. Good luck with your maverick downloads

Whenever I've done it that way it's told me that a newer version is available in the repositories !!
