3 questions about Ubuntu.. help if you can

1.) When I close my laptop, Ubuntu won't resume after I open it. It's just a black screen and I have to force it to shut down. Is there an easy fix for this?

2.) For some reason now when I boot with GRUB there are 2 versions of Ubuntu and I don't know why. One says 2.6.31-16-generic (and its respective recovery boot) and the other says 2.6.31-14-generic (and its respective recovery boot). I'm not sure which was there first, but there was definitely only one the first time I booted up Ubuntu. Also, they both boot to the same desktop which is why I was confused.

3.) Just wondering if there was a way to copy my GIMP settings/brushes/etc from my Vista partition to my Ubuntu partition. I don't want to have to set everything up again but.. if I have to oh well lol.

I hope someone can help easily enough!

On question #2, you are getting that because you've done a kernel upgrade and the system keeps the old kernel in case the new one fails. If both kernels work well enough, you can remove the older kernel (lower version number) using Synaptic, or apt.

I don't have a laptop so don't know much about them and the resume issue, and I'm not a big user of gimp so will let someone answer on questions #1 and #3.

Awesome thanks for the info. Is there a command to remove it using the terminal, or should I use Synaptic? ( I don't really know what it is but I'm sure I can figure that out easy enough)

It's easier to use Synaptic. If you want to try it, you can look for it in the System/Admin portion of your menu.

For command line removal it would be:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove linux-image-[version]-generic
If you do it incorrectly, you might break your system.

Sorry for being such a nub lol ^_^ I'm using the Synaptic program because I don't want to destroy everything I've done so far haha. I'm guessing it's under the "Base Systems" section, but there's only a version with a -9-generic. The older one on my GRUB is -14-generic, so I'm just not sure what I should do. Thanks though you've been a huge help with my stupid problems so far lol.

I usually search for "image" and "header" and then filter by "installed", if you go through you'll see the two that you have installed currently and can remove the older one.

Also after you're done you should do sudo apt-get clean

For question #1, I've had similar problems with older versions of Ubuntu, from what I see, Hibernation/Sleep is not well supported for some laptops using Linux, yours may be in this category. What is your laptop set to do when the lid is closed (hibernate or sleep?) You may want to switch to the other just to see. You don't want to leave it on that blackscreen, it'll heat up and continue using the CPU....no good at all.

For questions #3, you can try going into your user applications & settings from within Linux, copy the GIMP stuff over to your home folder in Linux (ctrl+h to show hidden folders, look for .gimp)

Hey thanks! I switched the option for closing the lid to the other (I forget which it is now from going back and forth lol) and now it will wake back up into Ubuntu, albeit a little slowly. I also tried searching and removing the old kernal but it is still there in the GRUB loader.. not sure about that one.

I'll be working on the GIMP thing later probably. Thanks for great advice. Don't know what I'd do without such helpful Linux friends

If you are running GRUB2, you can check the following HowTo for tips on working with it, and configuring it. They have a section there with specifics on adding/removing entries in the menu list.
