Black screen in Ubuntu
I am a newbie to Linux and also a first semester IT student. I have downloaded and burned the ISO Ubuntu file and when I attempt to boot from the CD, after selecting Install Ubuntu, I get a black screen. I have tried the alt. options to no avail. I have tried on my laptop(Compaq cq60) and my desktop(Dell 2350). I have a partition on my laptop just for Ubuntu but still no graphics. Help!

Welcome to the forums!

Have you tried the "alternate installer"? It's a text-based installer that will often work for users who have problems using the liveCD installer. It works every time for me.oz

You could try experimenting with some of the graphics oriented kernel boot options to get past any graphics issues:

Post your machine's specs here. Which Graphics Card do you have?
Does pressing Alt+Ctrl+F3 switch to command line mode?It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
