    Black screen in Ubuntu

I am a newbie to Linux and also a first semester IT student. I have downloaded and burned the ISO Ubuntu file and when I attempt to boot from the CD, after selecting Install Ubuntu, I get a black screen. I have tried the alt. options to no avail. I have tried on my laptop(Compaq cq60) and my desktop(Dell 2350). I have a partition on my laptop just for Ubuntu but still no graphics. Help!

    Welcome to the forums!

Have you tried the "alternate installer"? It's a text-based installer that will often work for users who have problems using the liveCD installer. It works every time for me.

You could try experimenting with some of the graphics oriented kernel boot options to get past any graphics issues:

Post your machine's specs here. Which Graphics Card do you have?

Does pressing Alt+Ctrl+F3 switch to command line mode?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Compaq CQ60 64 bit came with Vista home premium
Running Windows 7 Home premium and Windows 7 pro (2 seperate partitions)
Pentium Dual core t4200 2ghz processor
    Card- PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2A42&SUBSYS_360B103C&REV_07
    MONITOR- AUO20EC
Tried Ctr-Alt-F3 and no command line.
I have tried both 32 and 64 bit installs as well as the alt. text installer with same results. Ubuntu running fine on my desktop.

Does Ubuntu boot up in Safe Graphics Mode?
If Ubuntu boot up fine in safe graphics, open Terminal and execute this
    Code:
sudo lspci | grep -i vga
    Post output here.
