    Opera upgrade does not work

I got a pop up cue to upgrade the opera browser on my Ubuntu 8.04 os and now the browser will not work. It says to check the internet connection. My internet connection is working for all of my other browsers.

Has anyone run into this problem or know a way to fix it, please? Thanks!

Cousinlucky, my guess would be that you only need to update Opera via the package manager, but the fact that it won't start is not helpful. Try launching Opera via the command line and post any errors that you get.

MikeTbob, the opera browser starts but it will not connect to the internet. It indicates that I have a network problem. It may be that opera now refuse to " see " my external modem or it may be that something has to be enabled. This is frustrating!!

I was up all night till 6:00AM trying to install the version that worked before but without success.

I do not have any idea how to start a browser using the command line!!

That is weird. Does Opera have a "work offline" mode? I don't use Opera so I don't know much about it..........hopefully someone with more knowledge will chip in here.
To launch anything from the command line, just open a terminal/konsole window and type the name of the program.
    Code:
    tbob@Icehouse ~ $ firefox &
I use the ampersand (&) so that the command line is returned to me for further commands.
    Do your command should be
    Code:
    opera &
This may not give any error at all if you are certain that it say you have connectivity issues.

Both my Firefox and Epiphany browsers start up in off line mode which is why I stay away from them. Opera has an off line mode but it must be activated after the browser has been opened.

Does your new version of Opera have any proxy servers configured?

Go to Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Network ->Proxy servers

If it hasn't maybe it should have?

You can see the same settings in Firefox by going to

    Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Settings

Also The Opera I am running does remember the offline switch but gives me a warning when I start it up.

    Thanks Elija!

In Firefox the only item checked is " use system proxy settings " but there is no such box in Opera.

Opera indicates that I need a proxy server if I Do Not have direct access to the Internet! My computer does have internet access through an external modem.

Is a proxy setting the DNS address of my ISP?

I use an external modem to access the internet. Is there something I must do or set in the Opera browser so it will " see " an external modem?

    OK, your settings look fine.

A proxy server sits between you and the Internet. They can cache files for faster access among other things. Some ISPs use them, some use them invisibly and others don't.

How did you install Opera originally?
    How did you update it?

I do not recall whether I downloaded it from their website or whether I used the package manager. The upgrade was from the Opera website.

It may be that Opera want its users to pay for premium service whenever a newer version becomes available. A while back when I just used Suse 10 on the Internet I upgraded the Opera browser and encountered all kinds of problems.

Later today I am going to try and completely remove all traces of Opera from my computer and try downloading it again from the package manager.

That's pretty much where I was going. I don't think there is any conspiracy with Opera, it was more likely just a failed update
