Getting update manager to Update 8.04 to 9.04

One of our laptops is still running Ubuntu 8.04. The update manager says that the 8.10 upgrade is available, but I would like to upgrade it to 9.04 – missing the 8.10 step – using the update manager, not the 9.04 disk. Can this be done? I will of course, backup all the obvious files and folders.

No, if you're using the update manager, you need to upgrade to each release. So to go from 8.04 -> 9.04, you need to completely upgrade to 8.10 and then upgrade to 9.04. I recommend just doing a clean install. Less chance of problems.
