annoying icons in the notification area

I used "gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties" to change the gdm properties, and now an annoying Universal Access icon keeps appearing, and I can't remove it. I don't need the custom configuration anymore and would like to set it back to default. How do I do that?

You didn't mention what version you are using but in 9.10 you go to System-Preferences-Assistive Technologies and uncheck the box that says Enable Assistive Technologies.

This is used by physically or visually impaired people.

    Happy New Year !

You can set Gnome to default by removing these folder in your /home/user_id folder.

    .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
