ubuntu save to use?
Hi
New to the forum and linux.
No computer expert, but fed up with Windows and don't like the Apple 'hype'.
Was thinking trying Ubuntu for my laptop (as a start) but couldn't find whether it is save to use Ubuntu regarding internet safity and worms, trojans etc. Didn't find much about this on the site/web. Since linux is on the way up, threats are lurking about..?
Someone here who can share his light on this subject?
Thanx & good new year from Norway.

Ubuntu is much safer to use than windows. I don't believe that a firewall is enabled on first install, but https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverg.../firewall.html can give you the information you need to start it up.

Yes, it is safe. No virii, no trojans. Absolute safety, if you keep yourself to the rules of Linux. You can browse whatever you want to. Safety is granted by strict permission rules, which will annoy you for some time, but you'll get accustomed to it.
If you need a CD/DVD catalogizer, give a try to my program:

Welcome to the forums!

You can check this short guide to security to help you decide if you'd need any security oriented applications under Linux:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/lin...-security.html
Some users install a few security apps, and others don't bother.
Either way, we hope you'll have fun with Linux.oz
