Hi reitsma,
I think you're right.
Looking at the lines starting @ [22.805107], it appears to be your network card.
I've just had a quick look at faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO/BootPrompt-HOWTO.html#s11 because i think disabling your ethernet at boot will hopefully overcome the issue.
Do i take it the ethernet is integrated?
I think firstly it might be worth trying the emergency boot.
what version of ubuntu do you have?
8.04 (hardy heron) 8.10 (intrepid ibex) 9.04 (jaunty jackalope) 9.10 (karmic koala) 10.04 (lucid lynx)?
If you don't have any other OS installed on the pc, you will see a 3 second countdown during which hitting ESC will display:
ubuntu <version number> 2.6.31-14-generic
ubuntu <version number> 2.6.31-14-generic emergency
memtest
if you run the emergency boot, a successful boot should bring you through to a screen which has several options, one of which is "drop to console" or something similar.
I'm interested to see whether or not the same problem you're having occurs when you run an emergency boot, as i don't think it initialises networking.
If you get into the console via the screen i just mentioned, if you type "shutdown now -h", that'll shut the pc down, and re-booting will return it to its normal state.
If you don't get through to the menu/ you have the same error, just power-off using the power button
Thanks,
Matthew Millar

the desk top is the 2nd machine I am running Ubuntu on (karmic).
I barely have my laptop going -which took my quite some time- I will try the desktop somewhat later this week, most likely I wil try a reinstall of Ubuntu, helped for my laptop.
