Download and burn parted magic to a disk, reboot the machine and choose to run gparted, this will resize your partitions.

I second the suggestion to use the Parted Magic LiveCD.

If you don't have free space adjacent to the partition that you want to enlarge, you'll need to shrink and/or move some partitions around so that you do so.

If you are going to re-size partitions only then there is no need to worry but if you create a new partition, Ubuntu might not boot up due to change in Partition Structure.

I would suggest you to post the output of sudo fdisk -l command before changing partition structure.

    Code:
    sudo fdisk -l
Its small L in fdisk -l.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Tried it with parted magic but the computer is now dead

I mean: completely decesed, no power, nothing, dead as a dodo, kicked the bucket, etc (you get the picture) so some caution is adviced...

Something is wrong with Hardware only because PartedMagic has nothing to with that except handling Partition Structure of Hard disk.

Does machine give any response like beep sound, display any message on switching power on?

    No, absolutely nothing.

No sounds, no power, so most likely the mainboard is a goner. As you said, PartedMagic should not have been the problem, but gave it the the last push over the cliff...

Luckily we have something like 5 year guarantee on our computers in Norway so it's back to the shop (and my laptop is 4,5 years old).

It was about time for a new one anyhow, but it is nice having tried Ubuntu first before installing it on a new 2000 USD laptop...
