for troubleshooting sound in Ubuntu I'd start here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting
I had the same issue when I first installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my 64-bit over the holidays. As wide as were the waters,
So wide was wove the net.

WoW
Wow thanks that you guys answered me so quick but i found the easyiest way to fix it xD ^^ ubtuntu 9.10 "Normaly" looks for all the software you need for you hardware so i was thinking ..... what could be wrong ^^ its nothing wrong with linux the only wrong thing in this world is windows xD but i found a little wrong thing what the maker of ubuntu forgot... if you go to your terminal and type alsamixer and press enter there will be all the sound things if you press the right key it will bring you to the Master (the master controles all sounds) and press M to turn it on^^ because ubuntu turned it off xD
