Welcome to the forums!

We have a HowTo for installing software that covers installing from source, here:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/lin...are-linux.html
Be sure to check any readme files that come with your source file for any specific instructions.
Note also that you might be better off to find a .deb package for your application and using that.oz

software installation
i have tried installing VLC through source but it asks for some libraries whichi think the system doesn't have is there a way to download the source of those libraries as a whole

Ubuntu does not include the necessary software to compile programs from source by default, so you would definitely be better off downloading a binary package and transfering it to your Ubuntu box.
You will also need to find and install any dependencies the VLC has. Check out Keryx to help with offline dependency resolution.
This may also be helpful.

You can use AptonCD to install packages offline.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Some distributions will include far more applications on the installation disk than others, so if you won't be having a working internet connection, you might be better off to install one of them because you will likely run into various issues if you find yourself needing to install additional new packages very often.
Either way, hope you will have fun with Linux.
