Unhappy Laptop goes off when plug/unplug AC cable

Hi all. My problem here is the following: whenever I plug or unplug the AC cable in or out of my laptop it goes on hibernation, which is very annoying indeed. Sometimes I just want to plug it because I'm downloading something and my battery is running out.
I would like to add that when my laptop goes into hibernation, and I try to bring it back up nothing happens, only the fans go on, but no activity other than that, at which point I always just have to end up shutting the computer down cold and restarting it, which is getting to be a huge problem.
I have a Dell Vostro 1000 and running Karmic Koala

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hibernation requires that the laptop to first save any open or temporary files to the hard disk. It then restores them when it awakens. I have not had much luck with this feature, and always disable it.

Check your settings for power management. Open this to check them:

System --> Preferences --> Power Management

I looked to disable this feature in the power manager, but I can not see any option to disable it. The only possible choices for the option "When battery is critically low:" are Suspend, Hibernate, Shutdown. I have tried both Suspend and Hibernate with similar results.
So this is not a viable solution, thanks for the suggestion though.
