    Window control issue

Ok.... I have a new problem now.

I cannot move any of my open windows. Also, the "X" in the corner of the title bar is gone.

    This is sooooo annoying!

When did this start? Did you do anything before it started? Is it just the close button (x) missing, or are you missing window decorations entirely?

I'm going to wildly guess and assume you are using compiz fusion and are missing window decorations entirely.

    Open a terminal and type
    Code:
    metacity --replace
to switch back to the default window manager.

This is getting out of control!

When I go to open a terminal window, a white box comes up, that's it. No prompt. No text.

I do not believe I did anything to cause this.

Did you do any system wide updates (don't know how ubuntu does it, but something that updates all out of date packages.)?

    did you install anything recently?

Are you using Gnome, KDE, XFCE, something else?

Do you use Compiz, Gnome shell, or any other eye candy
    stuff like that?

Does your login screen apear different at all?

Can you try creating a second user, with all default stuff, and logging into that user instead.
(at the login screen, push ctrl + alt + F2, login, type
    `sudo useradd testuser`
    enter your password
    `sudo passwd testuser`
    enter some password,
then go back to your login (I don't know what ubuntu uses, but try ctrl + alt + F1, or F7)

    and try that user.

The login screen has not changed.

I have a second user, "guestuser" and I see the same window issue there too. It was the first time I logged into that account.

I am not sure what compiz, gnome shell or the like is.

I am ready to do another install and start over again. Any thoughts?

..Hmmm .... sorry, I'm out of ideas. Usualy it is a borked user config, or compiz (compiz is a graphical enhancement for linux. It makes stuff look pretty, but can makessome things unstable.)

I wish I could help more, but I'm not a *buntu guy.

Press Alt+Ctrl+F3 at Login Screen. It will switch to command line mode.
Login there and delete configuration folders.
    Code:
rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity
Make sure to type correct command.
    Reboot machine.
    Code:
    sudo shutdown -r now

Did you enable compiz anytime? Which Graphics Card do you have?

Try to create a new user again and check if everything is fine with new user.
