AFAIK, its not possible to upgrade form 32bit to 64bit. apt-get doesn't have multiarch support capability and it won't upgrade to another architecture.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

FWIW, benchmarks for current Linux systems show that generally a 64-bit OS will perform better than the same 32-bit one on the same x86_64 hardware. At least that's what I saw looking at a recent comparison of the latest 32-bit BSD with 32-bit Debian, and 64-bit BSD with 64-bit Debian systems. Generally, not universally, the 64-bit Debian was significantly faster performing in both CPU and disc-based benchmarks when run on the same physical hardware.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
Just remember, Semper Gumbi - always be flexible!
