Welcome to the forums!

If possible, you might want to consider installing a newer version of Ubuntu because 6.10 is no longer supported meaning that you may have a harder time finding software and security fixes that will work without too many issues:

Hello and Welcome!

ozar is right. You should look into a more upto date version.

Have a look under System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
Linux distributions usually have a repository of software that has been built, tested and packaged specifically for it. This repository is the best place from which to install software and it is also one of the strangest things when coming from the world of Windows.
Ubuntu's repository is huge!If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

Website
There is also a great website ( osalt.com) for all linux users. If you are not sure what program you're looking for, you can just type in the windows program you're familiar with, and it will list all of the open source equivalent programs. Very handy.
