Kubuntu fileserver (samba sharing)
I have recently updated my file server from ubuntu 9.10 to kubuntu 9.10 as there seemed to be lots of problems with ubuntu 9.10 and my particular machine. Although kubuntu is based on ubuntu its the kde version instead of gnome and there seems to be less "challenges" to sort out with it.
I now have kubuntu installed with its kde interface is very nice. I installed kdenetworking and samba file server. First impressions is that I like the kde better than gnome.
I setup samba shares from systems settings/advanced/samba (management tool)
All is sort of ok but intermittant. File sharing will work for say 15 hrs or so then stop working. If I edit the settings in the samba manager, click apply then put them back to what I had and click apply it will start working again. Why is it intermittant? sudo /etc/init.d/samba (off my head i think its the command - writing from an xp machine) status shows that nmbd and smbd are both running fine.
Right clicking a folder in dolpin allows me to see sharing and access file sharing setup, but the radio buttons for share, do not share are not present.
I have followed this tutorial here h**p://mugginix.com/articles/2009/Apr/19/Broken-File-Sharing/
But this is not working for me. I cannot get the radio buttons for sahring to appear.
Does anyone know how to enable the menu option and why the file server is intermittant? There are no hardware issues with the networking, its just the kubuntu install.
