Hibernate
What am I missing ? I can't get my computer to hibernate. Each time I click on hibernate it begins to do so then just as quickly comes back into run mode. I tried various options from ideas presented in Ubuntu forums but always I get the message "not enough free swap" despite the fact that I've allocated 2Gb for a swap partition. FYI .. I have 512 Mb of ram.
Can anyone help or is this problem unsolvable ?
Thanks,
Bruce

Hello and Welcome.
I would think that 2 GB would be plenty of swap but I have been wrong before. Can you post the output of
Code:free
You might indeed have too little swap space, I don't know honestly but you might be able to use something like parted magic to resize partitions or you might be able to create a swap file as a temporary solution.Code:df -H

Note, this is a dual boot system. Also run Win XP on an old Gateway desktop.
Windows was running extremely slow despite my best efforts to improve it's performance. I loaded Ubuntu and my wife said that it is now running like it used to. We are both very pleased with Ubuntu but would like to resolve this hibernate issue. Hope you can help.
Thanks,
Bruce

Well, the swap is being used for sure but it does not look full, the only thing I can think of is maybe 2GB swap space is not large enough for your machine to hibernate.
Can you issue these commands to see if you find anything that looks relevant. It's a long shot but maybe we'll get lucky.
Code:dmesg
Code:cat /var/log/messages

I don't think it's a swap problem. Suspending is much hardware dependant. It will definitely not work at all on some machines. I don't use Ubuntu so I can't give you precise help. You should see if there are tools like pm-suspend, suspend, suspend-s2ram available and installed. Then you could start playing with them and hope you're lucky.

Are you sure your swap partition is 2 GB ?
Post the outcome of
sudo fdisk -l
so we can check that.Charles
