DVD Writer undetected
Hi to all, i'm italian so, please, be patient if my english isn't perfect
I write here because no one of italian Fedora and Ubuntu forums could help me.
I've a problem with my dvd writer. I think no linux distro can detect my Dvd Writer, because i tried with Fedora/Ubuntu/OpenSuse/Mandriva/Zenwalk and no one decect it. I must boot distros from liveusb because livecds don't start.
I have Ubuntu 9.10
A notebook ASUS PRO52RL with motherboard ASUS X51RL
Windows detect it as "SLIMTYPE DVD A DS8A1P ATA DEVICE"
If u need some more informations ask me
Thank you for help

01-25-2010 #2Do you mean only that you cannot boot from a CD or DVD? Or do you mean that Ubuntu doesn't recognize any CD or DVD?I've a problem with my dvd writer. I think no linux distro can detect my Dvd Writer, because i tried with Fedora/Ubuntu/OpenSuse/Mandriva/Zenwalk and no one decect it. I must boot distros from liveusb because livecds don't start.

LiveCDs boot, but every distro returns some errors or timeouts (i don't know why, i think for this problem with the dvd writer).
The main problem is that ubuntu doesn't detect the DVD writer. I should make some specific configuration?

Each command returns NO OUTPUT

That would suggest the DVD writer is not being seen by the kernel. Can you go ahead and post the entire output of dmesg?
It'll be long so use code tags.Code:dmesg
Also the output ofI'm not sure what options you have if the kernel simply can't see the device at all.Code:lshw

dmsg returns a very very long log. I can't see the entire log because it is made by too many lines and the terminal don't show all of these. (i hope you can understand this sentence
)
LSHW returns
UPDATE: i incremented terminal's lines and i have the full log. But when i try to post it here an error occurs:Code:host608 description: Notebook product: X51RL vendor: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. version: 1.0 serial: NF1S8110930138 width: 32 bits capabilities: You can direct the dmesg output to a text file as so
But it really looks like the device is not being recognized by the system at all. I wasn't able to find much info on the web, but I did see reports of people with this DVD writer installing various linux distros without problem.Code:dmesg > dmesg.txt
I'm wondering if it's a hardware failure.

Thanks for help and quick replies
Fortunately i don't use the DVD writer so much and i can however write cd/dvd from Windows.
I also didn't find info and if you don't have any other idea i think i will try to forget this problem and enjoy linux
I forget a detail, but i'm not sure it's important. I tried to install FreeBSD from a CD and it seemd to work (i didn't finish the installation because i'm not enought expert
). Instead with Linux LiveCD nothing works and the installation procedure doesn't start.

If it is working in Windows and with FreeBSD, then it isn't a hardware problem and something to do with Linux.
It's odd. I've never seen a CD/DVD drive completely unacknowledged by the system before. They usually interface with the system via IDE or SCSI, and any standards compliant device should work under linux.
