When I use the command:
sudo fdisk -l
I'll get:

Which version of Ubuntu do you use? Ubuntu 9.10 uses Grub 2, previous versions do not so what you need to change to boot will vary depending upon the version of Ubuntu. What happened immediately prior to this error? Did you have Ubuntu up and working for some time?
