When I boot ubuntu, I'll get the message:
    Mount of filesystem failed.
A maintenance shell will now be started.
CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and re-try.
    root@this-pc-laptop:~#

    When I use the command:
    sudo fdisk -l

    I'll get:

    Disk /dev/sda: 60.0 GB, 60011642880 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors_track, 7296 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x5ea4f703

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 * 1 3648 29302528+ 7 HPFS_NTFS
    /dev/sda2 3649 4050 3229065 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
    /dev/sda3 4051 7296 26073495 83 Linux
    /dev/sda5 3649 4050 3229033+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
    root@this-pc-laptop:~#

Which version of Ubuntu do you use? Ubuntu 9.10 uses Grub 2, previous versions do not so what you need to change to boot will vary depending upon the version of Ubuntu. What happened immediately prior to this error? Did you have Ubuntu up and working for some time?

    I've got Version 9.10.
It worked until it hung and the system wasn't properly shut down.
