If you mean USB powered, I am using the ones that came with an old HP\Compaq desktop that I have 9.10 loaded on. I have no problem with them.

Jon, all usb speaks will work.

Run the following command and look for this?

    Code:
    cat /dev/sndstat
    Audio devices:
    0: Intel 82801DB-ICH4 (DUPLEX)
    1: USB Audio (DUPLEX)

If you see something like "1: USB Audio (DUPLEX)" then your U.S.B. speakers are detected. In your audio settings under Device and output look for your device and select it. It should be #1 or something like that or the name of your hardware.

Are you talking about USB sound card? If that's the case, good luck. I looked and looked and looked....I ended up buying one that people said worked but now pulse is...problematic so be prepared (there is a known bug that causes high screeching sounds with 5.1 output). Also now I can't even select 5.1 output (or even 4.1, before I could)

    Thumbs up

USB speakers are actually USB sound cards with speakers. So when you plug in, they get detected as a sound card.

It seems that those which do not need any drivers on windows to run, should mostly be supported by Alsa on Linux, so you should be able to use them right away.

To see how your speakers are detected, try lsusb.

There are 2 types of "USB powered" speakers,
    1. uses USB just for power, they have a seperate audio connection.
    2. has a USB dongle with a sound card in it, or the sound card is built into one of the speakers, and they only have a USB connection.

Type 1 will work with any PC.
    Type 2 may need drivers

Sony Pleomax speakers are stereo and type 2, and work fine, but they are not the best in terms of flexibility
