Trying to turn on my graphics chip

Hi, as the title says, I put Ubuntu 9.04 Linux on my computer a while ago and I found that my integrated graphics chip is going unrecognized.

I've tried many ways to get it to "turn on" and be recognized, but nothing works. Can anyone help?

what do you mean not recognized? you aren't getting any output on the monitor?

    Code:
    lspci | grep -i vga

no, im sorry. I should have been more specific. when playing online games (WoW, Diablo, etc) I get almost 0 fps.

here's the output of the code:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

There are well known problems with Ubuntu 9.04 and Intel graphics cards. An upgrade to 9.10 improves the situation for most people, although some still report troubles.

that barely counts as graphics card, if you can afford it and your motherboard allows a cheap nvidia or ati card for $30-$50 USD will make your life a lot easier, unless this is on a laptop in which case you just have to deal with it

im pretty sure i said graphics CHIP. as in, a micro chip, not a card. and yes, this is a laptop, and I'm paying for a monthly subscription to a few MMOs, so I'd like to get this chip working correctly.

now, for more details to my problem. I have completely taken windows off of my laptop. then, when i check for "rendering" to see if it recognizes the graphics chip, it says no. so for example when i launch WoW via WINE, the fps are near 0. I have tried messing with the programming of the xorg.conf file and it tells me that Ubuntu is in low graphics mode, when i do and forces me to put it back to normal so it can boot up.

what do i do?! Do I need a new laptop with a graphics card in it rather than running the graphics off of the motherboard?

did you follow the links as reed9 mentioned in previous post? ubuntu 9.04 has WELL KNOWN intel related graphics issues

personally in this case it makes more sense to use windows for the games, they are written and optimized for it, wine is merely a crutch

Performance is in all likelihood simply going to be awful with 9.04. There are some things you can do to mitigate it, but the best thing is to either upgrade to 9.10, which should give you some improvement, or use a different distro, preferably with a 2.6.31 kernel or later, which should also work better with that card.
