    Building a computer for ubuntu

    Hey Guys,

This doesn't have much to do with Linux, but could you tell me if all of these components would work well to make a computer? I'm building my own PC, and I just want to make sure there's no hardware conflicts.

This is what I got so far:

    Newegg.com - AMD Athlon II X4 630 Propus 2.8GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops (PROCESSOR)

Newegg.com - ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards (MOBO)

Newegg.com - BFG Tech BFGE98512GTOCE GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards (GPU)

I'll post some more hardware soon

Looks pretty good from an Ubuntu support point of view. won't guarantee compatibility with each other but at a glance they look pretty good

    Newegg.com - Computer Hardware,Video Cards & Video Devices,Desktop Graphics / Video Cards,NVIDIA,GeForce G/GT series

I would personally get a GT series card, a 9800GT for that price is...not great, considering the tech is about 2 years old now you can get a newer gen card in the same price range

motherboard most likely will be fine, just google the chipsets on it and see if they are supported by your distro

You should be fine with that hardware, but like BigTomRodney says, no guarantees.

I'd recommend doing a little research to make sure that the Linux kernel already has Realtek 8112L LAN chipset drivers included, but I'll bet it does. I suggest this because when one of my motherboards came with the 8111C chipset, it was about a month later before the kernel had that particular LAN driver.

Have fun with the new system!

    Nice setup.
You should be fine with it. Only concern as mentioned is the network chipset but that board has been out 6 months now so it should be supported.

Sorry to say but that video card is out of stock at Newegg.
They have an EVGA for $10 more although the core clock speed is 75mhz less then the BFG.

But as I have found out, Linux doesn't require bleeding edge and I'll back that up with my old Nvidia 8400 GS card!

Your new rig should really fly!

Looks like a screamer so far. What are you putting in for RAM?

    Thanks Guys!

    @D-cat: Crucial 2GB DDR3 1333

@TaZMAniac & coopstah13: Would I be better off altogether to go for this graphics card?

    Appreciate the help!

    That video card will work.
A big step up from the original one. Should be no problems at all with it.

I have that same card in the overclocked edition and it's a great card that works perfectly with Linux!

Looks like you should be good to go! Just keep the NIC in the back of the mind.
