Hiya! It's ok to be frustrated by a foreign OS with no one to turn to but we are only trying to help you...please be patient. Here is a link to a howto that explains quiet plainly how to reset the root password...which may be helpful to you.

You'll probably want to start off in the section titled "For GRUB users:".
As for the errors you are getting when you try to update, can you post the exact error message please? The more info you can provide, the better chance we have of helping you.
Try issuing these commands
Code:sudo apt-get clean
Code:sudo apt-get update

Welcome to the forums!
Probably the easiest way to install software for new users under Ubuntu is by using Synaptic. You can check this HowTo for some easy instructions on using it:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto
If you want to reset your user password, check this easy to follow HowTo:
How to reset your password in Ubuntu
If you want to remove Ubuntu instead, post back and we can give you instructions for doing that as well.oz
