    Smile a freezing PC

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10, I am having constant problems with my PC freezing. I have to shut it down manually. There seems to be no consistency to the problem as I could be in Firefox or Thunderbird. Anyone having this problem?

Since using Ubuntu 9.10, the only problems I've ever had is freezing when shutting down and the Software Center problem. Haven't heard about any other people with that problem though.

Does that only happen when you're running Firefox and Thunderbird? Or does it happen with any other applications?

Are you sure it's freezing the entire system and not just the UI? What happens if you press Ctrl-Alt-F2?

Well, if you can switch to a console screen w/ Ctrl-Alt-F2 (you might want to wait a bit before giving up), then you can login and see what is going on and kill Firefox or whatever is hanging the system. That won't fix the problem, but it will keep you from having to reboot the OS.

I got into the console, neither Firefox or Thunderbird showed up, therefore I could not kill them. Then I could not get out of the console and get back to where I was. There seemed to be nothing running except nautilus, which I killed. Nothing seemed to have changed. Any other suggestions?

How did you look for running processes? I use ps -aef
