Getting wireless to work on my HP Mini?
Hello,
After the 5th crash on my HP Mini Netbook.
P/N FW376UA#ABA
Service Tag 1030NR
I decided to try Linux. I downloaded ubuntu-9.10-netbook-remix-i386 and burned it as an .ISO and installed it on my Netbook with ease. Everything runs great. It is fast and smooth.
I am attempting to enable my internet now. Usually, there is a little blue light that comes on when I switch the wireless switch. However, when I slide it, it is staying orange. I took some pictures, but I can't post them here because it won't let me. But I've illustrated it well I think. I've been searching around the internet for this solution, but can't really come up with anything that isn't spam/garbage.

Anyway, you need the broadcom wl driver. I don't know the UNR remix at all, but normally Ubuntu has a hardware manager application that will install it for you. Otherwise, do
You will need a wired connection for this. If you do not have that, post, and we can go through installing it the hard way.Code:sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

Cool Cool. Yeah I don't have a wired connection, I tried plugging in my Ethernet cable, but couldn't get online. Thanks for the help. What is the difficult way?
- 02-25-2010 #6
You'll need to download the necessary packages to a flash drive or other external drive, transfer them to your Ubuntu machine, and install them.
Links the the necessary packages are the 4th post down in this thread.

Do you have the driver disk that came with your laptop? You can try-
sudo apt-get install ndisgtk. Then go to the Windows Wireless Drivers application and browse to .inf file. Once that is complete you just need to go to network manager and add a wireless connection. For home you will most likely need to set it to "connect automatically".
- 02-25-2010 #8
ndiswrapper is unnecessary for this card. Also, without internet access already, downloading and installing anything with apt-get is not possible.
Regarding your ethernet issue, can you repost the output of
It was not included in your previous post.Code:lspci -vnn lsmod

"lspci -vnn & lsmod in the terminal screen yielded below. Also, I downloaded: bcmwl-kernel-source_5.10.91.9+bdcom-0ubuntu4_i386.deb dkms_2.1.0.1-0ubuntu1_all.deb
fakeroot_1.12.4ubuntu1_i386.deb
patch_2.5.9-5_i386.deb
I put them on an external, and transferred them to my netbook. I installed them in the order you recommended, dkms, fakeroot, and patch before bcmwl-kernel-source. Does everything sound good so far? Thanks for your help too!

Ok, for ethernet, your card is recognized and has a driver loading. What happened when you tried to connect using the network manager?
Plug in the ethernet cable and do
For the wireless, now that you have everything installed, just restart and see if it is working. Currently the b43 driver is loading which will conflict. You may need to blacklist it.Code:sudo dhclient eth0
Go ahead and do that before restarting. (This just adds a line to the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf with the line blacklist b43. You can do so with any text editor as well.)Code:echo "blacklist b43" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
