A lot of the time, freezes like this are related to your graphics card. With Ubuntu, try either the alternative install disc, and do a text based installation, or try it in Safe Graphics Mode.
If you have an intel based graphics card, you can also try turning off kernel mode setting. I'm not up on my Ubuntu, but I believe at the menu screen, you hit F6 for other options, then ESC to edit the boot line, then after the quiet splash bit, add
Code:i915.modeset=0

Hi and Welcome !
Its a Graphics Card problem only. As reed9 suggested already, Alternate Installation Disk works fine in all machines and its easy to fix Graphics Card problem after installation.
Alternate installer is text based and uses minimum resources of Graphics card. There is no difference in Regular and Alternate installer disk except installer type.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
