    cannot connect ubuntu 9.10 to net

    hi just built my first pc, installed ubuntu 9.10 and tried connecting to the net through my ethernet cable and all that happens is it says cannot find server.Do i need to install network settings & if so what & where,or should it automatically detect them?As this is my first build im a novice but am willing to listen & learn,any help i will be very grateful to receive as im confused & don,t know what to do next.thanks so much in advance.Darren

    to run those commands, in case you don't know, you open a terminal, presuming you are using the defaults, you can get one from applications->accessories->terminal
