How to change the ubuntu logo which appears while booting

Hi, how can i replace ubuntu logo,(white logo with black background) which comes very first while booting (it also comes while shuting down) in ubuntu 9.10. I am able to replace other images, which comes after this image. I have done it by replaceing my images with the images present in /usr/share/images/xflash.But it is not possible to replace the mentioned image by this way. Where the above mentioned image (white with black bg) will be stored? Thank you for answering...

I once looked for this - I've just found the relevant thread on the Ubuntu forums here. This was a while ago, though, so I'm not sure if it still works. I quite like the Ubuntu logos myself

karmic uses both usplash and xsplash.
an easier way to change the theme could be using startup manager:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install startupmanager
you can then download themes from sites like gnome look: http://www.gnome-look.org/

btw, usplash images are stored in the folder /usr/local/lib/usplash/
