Ubuntu 9.04 freezes
I just made a fresh install of Windows XP SP3 and also installed a "dual boot" Ubuntu 9.04.
Windows XP is working fine but after I select Ubuntu the system freezes when I get to the Desktop Enviroment. The cursor does not move and the only way is to make a hard reset. Occasionally I can ove the cursor for a few seconds before it freezes.
Is there any ideas what can be wrong?
The computer is brand new, an Intel I3 processor and 4GB RAM, motherboard Gigabyte GA-H55-UD2H. I did not add a separate graphics adapter but is using the onboard graphics provided by the I3 chip.

this is a well known problem for almost a year now
the easiest solution is to upgrade to 9.10

10.04 will be available in next month only.
I would suggest you to go for fresh install of latest version instead of upgrade. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

OK, many thanks for your expert advice. I tried upgrade to 9.10 without success. Ubuntu still freezes whenever I click on the menu bar in the desktop enviroment.
I will try a fresh install when 10.04 is released.
Do you think a fresh install of 9.10 would help?

Definetly not,Ubuntu 9.10 has a different set of problems like LAN Drivers, sound drivers etc.

many of my friends switched back to 9.04 when they tried 9.10.(luckyily i didn't try it)
if you ask me what would prefer between 9.04 and 9.10? i would go with 9.04.
if you can't wait install 9.04 afresh.
small advice:whenever a new distro is out, don't install it in a hurry.wait for 10 to 15 days and read reviews in forums like ours and then try it.

Upgrade created problem for me most the time and as I mentioned earlier, I prefer fresh install instead of upgrade.
Regarding 9.10 bugs, yes, it has more bugs as compared to other versions but none of version is bug free. Some has more than others and it depends on Hardware too.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Now I tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 from the Windows enviroment. In Windows XP I ran the install program for Ubuntu and choose Install in Windows. This way I thought I could easily remove Ubuntu just by using the control panel, Add/remove program.
As Ubuntu still freezed after this install I decided to uninstall Ubuntu. I went to the control panel, remove program and I was told Ubuntu was successfully removed.
However when I now boot the computer I still get the question what OS I want to start: Windows XP or Ubuntu. It seems there are still residues from Ubuntu left in my computer. How do I get rid of this question?
I hope for your help as it irritates me to get this question when I know I uninstalled Ubuntu already.

You have to edit boot.ini file to remove Ubuntu entry. Post the contents of boot.ini file here.
Open Start - Run dialog box in Windows OS and type this
Do not edit boot.ini. Copy contents and post here.Code:notepad C:\boot.ini
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Your boot.ini file still has the Ubuntu entry so if all you want is to remove the Ubuntu entry from your menu, delete the last line:
C:\wubildr.mbr = "Ubuntu"
