Ubuntu don't see all 3 gigabyte memory

    Hi there
On my computer was 2 gigabyte memory and I bought still 1 gigabyte memory. In the Ubuntu show only 2.75 instead 3 GB.
I have old computer. P-IV but in the manual\book for my motherboard say that can use to 4 gigabyte of memory.
    I have 2 questions.
Why in the Ubuntu don't show all 3 GB memory?
If I buy still 1 gigabyte of memory, it\she will show 4 GB in the Linux or not?

Strange! Where did you get that number (2.75G)?
    Did you run command free?

    are you running a 32 bit O/S?

You need a 64 Bit O/S to break the 3GB limit.

Are you sure that you don't have an onboard video chipset using shared memory?

If you have discrete graphics card, you can disable shared memory in the bios.

Of course. I said that I have P-IV. All P-IV has only x86 architecture

OK, When I pull out 1 memory(I have 3 memory on 1 GB each) show exactly 2 gigabyte. If would worked video chipset show 1.75 gb. Right?

perhaps the module is bad then, try running memtest, you should be able to install it with synaptic if it isn't already

    That's not entirely correct.

Certain later model Pentium 4 chips supported EM64T, which was Intel's brand name for X86_64. The original question is a valid one.

Sorry, roman numerals didn't register in my mind. Just use to seeing P4, or Pentium 4.

Sounds to me you're being limited by a 32 Bit O/S, not much you can do, unless you get a 64Bit Kernel.

Windows has this problem as well, sometimes they can see 3.1GB, sometimes they can only see 2.5GB. It depends on how the system reports it to the O/S and how the O/S Calculates the total.
