    Try installing the restricted extras then most media players should be able to play your media files:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

    Hello and Welcome!

    First, may I ask if you were able to make a complete update of your system online after you installed the CD? If not yet, then you may do this by:

    System>Aministration>Update Manager>Install Updates. This would take some time depending on your internet connection. You would also be needing an internet cable for this since your wireless might not be working as of this moment.

    However, if already done, you can try also to put a cd/dvd on the drive and try to play it with any of the players that comes with the installation by default. I would use "Totem/Movie Player". It would advise you of any missing plugins that are needed. Just install everything and it might just get it playing already.

    in the terminal:

    $ sudo apt-get install xxxxxx**

    **change to the particular plugin needed

    I wish you well!
