Grub Rescue Boot after Upgrade Karmic -> Lucid Lynx
Used these instructions:
Specifically these instructions (on my laptop - Dual boot):
To upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10/8.04 LTS on a server system:
install the update-manager-core package if it is not already installed;
edit /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades with your favourite editor:
for 9.10:
set Prompt=normal
for 8.04 LTS
set Prompt=lts
Finally, execute sudo do-release-upgrade -d command to launch upgrade tool and follow the on-screen instructions.
These instructions didn't work:
To upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 on a desktop system:
press
Alt+F2
to launch the command box,and type in
update-manager -d.
Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release ‘10.04′ is available. Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.
Everything seemed to go ok. When I rebooted, it booted up to a:
grub rescue
prompt
Booted up with a USB drive. Looked up "grub rescue" and found this:
per the recommendation, I downloaded and ran:
"Boot Info Script"
and came up with the following:
WOULD"VE POSTED IT HERE, BUT IT SAYS I CAN'T POST URL'S ALTHOUGH
THERE AREN'T ANY HERE.
(If this works, see attachment)
(I was asked where to install "Grub" as part of the update. I opened
GParted to try to determine my boot partition and it showed a linux "boot"
partition at SDA2. So that's where I told it to install Grub.)
Now, as I said, I get the
grub rescue
prompt. And I'm clueless as to what to do next.
Anyone?
Thanx

install 9.10 afresh,Ubuntu used grub upto 9.04.when you upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 grub wont upgrade to grub2.so,better install 9.10 or wait for 10.04.
installing boot loader from live 9.10 cd might work, check it out.

I prefer fresh install instead of Upgrade.
Anyways, have you tried to re-install GRUB using LiveCD of Ubuntu 9.10?It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I did a quick search on grub reinstall here and came up
with Super Grub Disk (SGD 1.30). Downloaded the cdrom
ISO, burned it, booted it and it gave me the following option:
"load /boot/grub/core.img from (hd0, 7)"
from there it boots to Ubuntu Lucid Lynx
but, now I can only seem to get there from the SGD CD.
What does the "Load" line mean, and is there a way to
fix this so that it doesn't require the SGD CD?
Thanx

Figured it out.
Since I can't post links, let's just say I searched
for:
"Dual Boot Ubuntu and Windows - Communtiy Ubuntu Documentation"
That helped.
Also had to do a Repair install of Windows from the CD.
