No Media in drive
My cd player stopped working- it is unable to read disks.
I searched through some other threads and followed directions for similar problems to no avail.
Is there a way to removed and reinstall the cd drive?
Thanks,
Dave

Try it on another machine (if you are on a desktop)
If you are on a laptop, it's harder to see if it is software or hardware.
You may install a second OS and see if it works.
CD driver is on the kernel, I'm pretty sure. Next time you update the kernel, if it still don't work, I'll consider taking the laptop to a repair shop

If the media that you are trying to read works in other computers, your drive might be faulty, especially if it won't read any disks at all, or the drive could be fussy about the quality of the media that you are using.
if your current drive is an older one, I'd replace it because you can get really good DVD/CD R/W drives for around $22 to $30 these days, often with free shipping.
Let us know how it goes.oz

I will run it by the computer shop and see if they have time to install a new one and get it working correctly.
This is on my laptop and has been Ubuntu only for a couple of years with no problems until now.
I will post back when I get it back and working correctly.
I appreciate folks taking the time to post replies!

I had a new drive installed today and still have the same problem [None of the local computer shops will touch Linux].
When I put in a CD or DVD I get the "unable to mount volume - no media detected" error.
The disk spins up, the light blinks, but nothing happens???
I spoke with a friend who runs Linux and he suggested deleting the drive and then adding it back. He was positive that all the currect CD players are compatible with Linux.
I cannot find the hardware settings?
TheSystem/Hardware drivers says no proprietary drivers are being used- nothing about the hardware itself.
Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Dave
