I know this is over a year old, but if you've found a solution, I'd love to hear it. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.1 DTS and trying to build a Cacti server. Things were running fine but then MySQL failed and whenever I try to 'service mysql start' or status, I get the same error that you are.
$ service mysql status
status: Unable to connect to system bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory

same here
lo mismo aqui, hombres.
i get the same error. some of my services (server> service --status-all) come up, such as ssh and apache but a restart won't work on them.
i am running ubuntu 10.04 LTS server edition straight out of the box. found an upgrade for the network manager (core) but i haven't done it yet ...
having said that, i found out that i also cannot connect to my router's address from my other box. so perhaps this is not an ubuntu mistake at all...?
cheers
Xizao
