    hdd madness! (my first linux)

im a noob and i screwed up my friends compy. so pls help.

i downloaded kubuntu and installed it to my usb 2.0 hdd.
i figured i could then use that hdd on any computer and it would use the ram and the processor no problem.

i think im off a bit

not asking for for you to help me with my miracle os that i can transport

its just that in my blunder i let kubuntu change the boot operation of this computer.

the only way i can boot win7 is by changing the boot sequense in the bios so that it boots from my hard drive, and then using grub to select the partition i want to use

(itslike grub is half installed on motherboard and half on the external hard drive)

by doing this i can gain access to all of the hdd in the laptop.
but only when my hdd is plugged in can i do this

if i dont grub rescue says theres no such drive, and dosnt recognize any commands (even after looking them up)

so how do i put my room mates laptop back in working order? so that he dosnt have to boot from my external hdd.

mind you i know i can format his compy for him, but i would like to avoid this.

Pretty sure you need the Windows 7 CD, but there may be other options out there.

How To Manually Troubleshoot and Repair Windows 7 Bootloader | Windows 7 hacker

An easy way to have a portable OS is to create a persistent Live USB image.

you would need to get either a Vista or 7 repair disk (like an actual install disk or there is a site that offers download of just the repair console)

boot from that, open command prompt and type:

    Code:
    bootrec.exe /fixboot
    bootrec.exe /fixmbr
    shutdown -s -t 000
which will write a Vista/7 boot sector and loader to the hard disk

You can also probably use EasyBCD to reinstall the bootloader and/or rewrite the MBR. Google it up.

Not only probably. Get a live CD and install a new boot loader. Then configure the boot loader to boot which ever OS you have on which ever hard disk you can plug in.
