    Problem downloading Ubuntu 9.10

    I was installing Ubuntu, version 9.10, when I got this message:

    “This computer has no operating system on it. Where do you want to put the Ubuntu 9.10…Write previous change to disk and continue? Cannot undo…”

    Contrary to what the Ubuntu message said, I do have an operating system: Windows XP Version 2002 SP 3. My computer is a Dell Dimension 3100, 512 mg memory.

    I am worried that going ahead with the installation will cause system problems – the “computer has no operating system” message alarmed me that the installation did not know what it is doing.

    I know more than the average person about computers, but not that much more. Any major problem could easily overwhelm me.

    To prepare for a disaster, I can copy my data onto a detachable hard drive, and I could reinstall Windows, but I’d hate to go to all that trouble.

    Since it is not crucial that I install Ubuntu, should I take the conservative road and forget about it?

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Hi and Welcome !

    We have to check partition structure of your hard disk first. Boot up from Ubuntu LiveCD, open Terminal and execute this
    Code:
    sudo fdisk -l
    Post output here.

    * Its small L in fdiks -l.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
