[SOLVED] video colors are wrong
Hello - anybody seen this before ?
updated the distro from 9.04 > 9.10, using the recommended Nvidia driver,
version 1.85. Playing xvid avi or mpg in Movie Player results in some kind of
color reversal. Reverting back to the older driver choice (version 173)
and the problem is resolved.
Apparently I'm unable to post a URL yet, but the colors look reversed.
For example, flesh tones are blue

Hi and Welcome !
Execute this code in Terminal :
Post the output here.Code:lspci | grep -i vga

Hello -
here is the output
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G84 [GeForce 8600 GT] (rev a1)
I should mention that I've made some progress with the problem.
I entered the preferences for Movie Player and on the video tab, did a reset.
Even though no adjustments had previously been made, it seemed to put right
this issue.
I've since uninstalled the Movie Player and installed Gnome Mplayer.
I see that there is a "Movie Player" and a "Movie Player Totem (xine backend)"
What's preferred in Ubuntu ? What is the xine backend ?
Thanks for any info.

I prefer VLC Player over MPlayer, Totem or xine. VLC player has simple interface and it support most of the media formats.
Movie Player uses Gstreamer engine and Totem with xine backend uses xine engine. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Thanks very much for the info.
I noticed that I get some occasional crackling in the audio; even the jingle at login
crackles and/or hesitates (not every time)
I had Amarok installed, and I thought - in for a penny, in for a pound.
So I installed the kubuntu-desktop. My idea being to have one login ID
using gdm-gnome and create a second ID to use kdm-kubuntu.
I found in practice this didn't work as smoothly as I liked, so I found this
massive apt-get remove command in a post somewhere that would get rid of
KDE completely.
I think doing the upgrade from 7.10 > 8.04 > 8.10 > 9.04 > 9.10 is not as clean
nor as well running as a clean install. I wish there were a way to make it as if
it were a fresh install.
I don't have that much customization, or stuff installed -perhaps I really should
just blow it away, boot from the dvdrom and install fresh.
Perhaps to 10.04 now?
(Apologize for the brain dump)

I always prefer fresh install over upgrade. 10.04 is LTS and will be supported for a long time. I would suggest you to go for fresh install of 10.4.

same problem
I have the same symptoms: after upgrading to 9.10 video colors went bad in mplayer & VLC - skin tones were blue, as if the red or magenta channel weren't being displayed.
Oddly enough youtube videos looked normal.
Opening mplayer preferences and hitting "reset to defaults" on the "display" tab fixed the problem, both in mplayer and in VLC.
