Kernel missing after partial update Ubuntu 9.10

Ok, I messed up and hit "ok" for a partial upgrade. My fault entirely.

Now Grub finds no kernel to boot to, only a disk diagnostic test runs when I try to boot.

Is there a way to reload a kernel to dev/sha1 from the live cd terminal?

I'd rather not lose the data on the drive with a fresh install if I don't have to.

    Thanks much!

    Hi and Welcome !

Check the contents of /boot folder. Isn't there any earlier kernel version?
Did you upgrade from 9.10 to latest 10.04 or just did a regular update of 9.10?

Mount /boot partition in LiveCD and post the output of ls command here.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

There are no other kernel options in grub. Only memtest.

not sure of my "mount" command here...sorry.

    ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ mount /boot
    mount: can't find /boot in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

There is a boot partition listed...

    ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l

    Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x000057fd

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 * 1 9352 75119908+ 83 Linux
    /dev/sda2 9353 9729 3028252+ 5 Extended

    Execute this
    Code:
    sudo mkdir ubuntu
    mount -t ext4 /dev/sda1 ubuntu
    ls ubuntu/boot
    Post output here.

In case mount command throws error, remove -t ext4.

Sorry for the long delay, my ISP went down for 20 hours right after my last post. Here is the result of the code above.

    ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ ls ubuntu/boot
    grub memtest86+.bin
    ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

Kernel has been removed and there is no way to re-install it.
    What is in grub folder?

Partial upgrade has messed up everything and I don't think there is a way to fix this problem because kernel is gone.

I would suggest you to backup data using LiveCD and re-install.
