extreme heat: toshiba satellite A205-s5859
I am also having a problem with the heat with 10.04 NBR. Also a toshiba satellite; A205-s5859. Everything works out of the box except it appears the optical drive isn't reading dvds but thats not that much of a problem. The problem is the extreme heat when I boot under linux. First time I've ever tried linux and really enjoy it compared to winblows. I am completely [nOOb] unaware of how to fix this problem, perhaps a different distro? I will try the terminal commands DC suggested and report back my findings. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Are you booting up from LiveCD? Post the output of sudo fdisk -l command too.
* Its small L in fdisk -l.Code:sudo fdisk -l
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

What does the tree look like under /proc/acpi/fan ?
might be able to try something to the effect of
sudo echo 1 > /proc/acpi/fan/FAN0/state
in attempt to force the fan on manually. I had to do this with my old IBM ThinkPad, it's now part of the startup script.

maybe this has something to do with it
After a little poking around I see that cpu1 is at 100% while cpu2 is at 5%
That's not good
I'll stay on here as long as I can but my laptops already heating up.
Tried the bt4 distro, which is based on 8.10 and have no problems whatsoever.
really like lynx but not cooked

Well, 10.04 is fresh out of the hatchery. You may have found a bug in the OS. I would recommend that you do a search on the Ubuntu bug list for 10.04 and if you don't find any reports, then post a report yourself. Also, since you are running off of a live CD/DVD, it may not have the latest kernel fixes that are in the installed/updated version. I seem to recall some nattering on the web about a power issue related to 10.04 which may have been fixed immediately before it was released to production.

Ok
I'm going to do a full install to an extra 20g hardrive I have lying around and see if that changes anything.

Also, when you finish the installation, make sure you also get the latest updates, especially for the kernel. The Ubuntu update manager will do that for you, but it takes a bit of time to detect available updates unless you do that manually. Then, you may need to alter the power profile of the system.
