Which version of Ubuntu are you trying to install? Post your Machine's specs too.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

i have a second hard drive i in stalled with 2g of ram exrernal hard drive.Is to much memory a problem?

Memory is not a problem. Are you trying to install Ubuntu inside Windows Vista or in separate partition?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I need to diskpart to install linux.i have a ative drive installed i guess that is useless.i have cd i made but when trying to use help booting i was prevebted from coping full boot.I t says it will run along side with windows am i wrong?

I am not getting your problem at all.
It looks like you want to install Ubuntu 9.10 inside Windows Vista. It really easy process. Could you post your machine's specs here?
Does your machine boot up fine from Ubuntu LiveCD?It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
