    installing nvidia driver version 96

After going through the hardware drivers under administration in ubuntu 9.10, it found the new nvidia driver. So I installed it without a hitch, rebooted and found out I couldn't change any resolution higher than 640x480. After scowering the forums everyone seemed to be on the same page saying to edit the xorg.conf file manually but everytime I did this it would cause an error when I went to go back into the nvidia configuration. Well I read the man file and typed the commands, as root of course, nvidia-xconfig -mode "800x600" "1024x768" "1200x1024", this ended up fixing the problem. It found my monitor type and allowed me to change my res all the way up to 1920. I have however found another problem, I have an 8 port autoview switcher and when I tried to boot with the monitor plugged into the switch it messed up good. Had to get to command prompt add the nvidia-xconfig -mode string again. Currently I can't use my monitor switch with this driver, any thoughts?

has anyone ran into ths problem with a monitor switch before? I'm still not able to get my monitor to work with the switch. after boot it comes up saying that the settings didn't work and would you like to boot with default vesa driver for one session, fix problem, create new config file. nothing seems to fix the problem.

I've used a KVM switch w/ Ubuntu 7.04, 8.04, and 9.04 that supports vga up to 1920x1200. I think it depends upon the switch. If the switch isn't set to the Ubuntu device when you boot, then Ubuntu will only see the maximum native resolution of the switch, and not what is passed thru from the monitor. Also, they h-sync, v-sync, and refresh rates may differ.

I have a cybex commander autoview 8 port switch. and yes I have it set to the correct system when it boots. the problem is that it will work at 640x480 but it won't let me change the resolution to anything higher than that. I have an ati radeon 9800 and it won't even boot to the gui on that card. I'm thinking it has something to do with the drivers. xp works without a hitch, I can change the resolution up to 1900. any thoughts?
