Switching back to Mac OS X? Need Help

Hello all, I switched to Ubuntu with a clean install and whipped out the Mac OS X. I now want to switch back to this and I have the .dmg file on my flash drive with the OS X on it. I was wondering how I would go in installing this since it is a .dmg file and since it needs to be installed. Thanks in advance.

Once you've nuked your OSX install, I think you are SOL from the user end. The dmg file is a MAC HFS+ image which may be mountable in Linux but you won't get a bootable CD burned for it.

Your best bet would be to call Apple support and ask for a new CD. Once they verify your Mac's serial number, they should be able to send you a disc for the cost of media and shipping.

If the file is an ISO, you should be able to burn it with Brasero (under Sound and Video), select Burn Image to Disc.

the file is 6.9 gb so I would need DL. I was just wondering if there was anyway around that.

you think I could use VMware server?

I don't think so, unless you can get a PPC machine emulation, install to the virtual hard drive, take an image backup of that virtual hard drive from inside the VM, burn across discs (or store to a sufficiently large USB drive), then restore that image to the actual Mac... plausible but I wouldn't want to be the one doing it as there's no guarentees anywhere along the way.

You're probably better off securing a DL burner and disc.

hey I got a DL disc. Do I burn it as a DMG or switch it to ISO first before the burn?

ISO, must be burned as an image, not a file.

ahhh thanks! I accidently burned it as a DMG file with UltraISO and it didn't work. Do you recommend any programs to convert it to ISO?

I looked around and Transmac came up. Would you recommend that?

I have no idea how or if it will work under WINE. I never tried it.

I have found via a Google Search some things that might work for you...

    From Linux: http://vu1tur.eu.org/tools/
From a Mac: Convert .dmg files to .iso files for burning elsewhere - Mac OS X Hints
and from Windows (or maybe WINE): Converting DMG to ISO - PearPC
